Exploring the history of the East Antarctic ice sheet and lithospheric structure of the Gamburtsev Subglacial Mountains were primary goals of the 2007/2008 International Polar Year (IPY). Scientists from several nations are worked together to launch a flagship program to explore a major mountain range buried by a large continental ice sheet and bounded by numerous subglacial lakes.

What’s beneath Antarctica’s ice?

Ground-penetrating radar has discovered a lake beneath the Antarctic, which hasn’t been seen for at least 15 million years. Russian scientist are drilling down to the lake in the hopes of discovering a new world of living organisms. The ice core obtained from the drilling will also be a record of climate deep into the Earth’s past, which could help with our understanding of the present climate change.

This NASA/Goddard movie shows the context of where Lake Vostok is in Antarctica. The camera then flies over the only highway on the lake and comes to rest on a view of an abandoned Russian station.
